Gladys O. Dykes Sims, Mississippi Settlement Relative, Dies on May 11

LAUREL, MS - Gladys O. Sims, 91, of Laurel, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at her residence.

A homemaker, Mrs. Sims was a member of Fair Ridge Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Sims, in 1990.

Mrs. Sims is survived by her son, Charles E. (Mann) Sims of Stringer; her daughters, Peggy Procell and Shirley Parker, both of Stringer, and Pamela Lampton of Magnolia; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel. The body will be placed at Fair Ridge Baptist Church in Jasper County 1 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will begin 2 p.m. with interment in the church cemetery. The Revs. Randy Sullivan, David McNeil and Buddy Jennings will officiate.

Memory Chapel Funeral Home of Laurel is in charge of arrangements.

Jeannette Rankin Byers Dies in Paris on May 4

PARIS, TX - Jeannette Rankin Byers passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005 after a brief illness. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 9 at the Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Bossier City, LA, a graveside service will be held in Pelican, La. at 2:00 p.m.

Ms. Byers was born on July 26, 1916, in Goss, Texas, the first child of Frank and Candace Rankin. She graduated from Pelican High School in 1934 and won the "Peg Malion" contest in Shreveport in 1939. Jeannette married Elvin P. Byers in 1940. Elvin preceded her in death March 13,1978. She was a member of the Hillside Christian Church, Kansas City, MO, and American Business Women's Association and retired from the Social Security Administration with 42 years of service. She lived in Kansas City, Missouri for over 55 years and recently moved to Paris, Texas to be closer to her family.

One grandson, Micah Ross Newstadt and four brothers, Lewis Rankin, Frank E. Rankin Jr. the Reverend Charles Rankin and David A. Rankin preceded her in death.

Jeannette is survived by her only child, Mary Elizabeth Byers Teschner and husband, Alan C. Teschner; her grandsons, Mitchel Rankin Newstadt and John Michael Teschner; and her great-granddaughter, Sunshine Elizabeth Newstadt. She also leaves three sisters: Margaret Garvey, Mary E. Martin, Addie Ruth Rankin; and four brothers: James J. Rankin, Daniel F. Rankin Sr., Robert P. Rankin and Donald Rankin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice.

SHREVEPORT, LA Services will be conducted at Centuries Funeral Home Chapel for Virginia Davis Slayton, 80, of Shreveport, LA on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at 2 p.m. Officiating will be Dr. Floyd Davis of Woodridge Baptist Church. Interment to follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 3 from 6-8 p.m.

Mrs. Slayton entered into rest on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at home after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Pelican, LA, but lived in Shreveport, LA and Waskom, TX most of her life. She was a dispatcher for the Shreveport Police Department for 15 years. She was a member of TOPS, where she regularly won the honor of "Queen of KOPS" and enjoyed so many precious friendships. She was a born again Christian and a believer in the Protestant faith.

She was preceded in death by her son Larry D. Slayton, father Ernest Davis, mother Dezzie J. Davis, brothers Ernie Davis and Tommy Davis, sisters Bettye Brookins, Carolyn Barber and Linda Thompson.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Leon Slayton; two sons, Gregory Slayton and Dennis W. Slayton; daughter Denise Shofner and husband Ricky; seven grandchildren, who lovingly knew her as "Honey-Honey," Kim Slayton, Zach Slayton, Amy Hutchinson, Brad Rogers, Sean Slayton, Haley Vines, and Evan Shofner; five great-grandchildren, Emily Vines, Hunter Slayton, Garrett Slayton, Reagen Slayton, and Caden Hutchinson; sister Katherine Dolin and husband George; brother E. Jack Davis and wife Betty, all of Shreveport, LA; and brother Bobby Davis and wife Carmen, of San Diego, California.

Pallbearers will be R.L. Bamburg, Don Chandler, Frank Prest, Evan Shofner, Zach Slayton, and Van Winn.

We want to thank God for all the wonderful memories we will cherish forever; her prayers, tender love and care, guidance, spirit and humor. No one will ever be able to take the place of our loving wife, Mama and "Honey-Honey," and we look forward to our reunion with her one day.
